The heart of Estero is the spring-fed Estero River which flows to Estero Bay. During the early 20th century fishing families such as the early european settlers Alvarez, Fernande, Johnson, and Soto moved upriver to the settlement wihich later became known as Estero. Estero was incorporated in 1904 by Dr. Cyrus Reed Teed founder of the utopian community called Koreshan Unity. Their original tract is now owned and preserved by Florida as the "Koreshan State Historic Site". Most of the settlement and development in Estero was near the river until the 1970's.
