During the next decade only a few homesteaders moved in and in 1887 the first school was built. When Braxton B. Comer bought 6000 acres of land around Survey in the late 1880's the population more than doubled. In 1888 he brought 50 Negro families from Alabama with mules and equipment to work his large plantation growing pineapples, bananas, coconuts and other kinds of fruit.
In 1901 a Post Office was opened and later in 1910 the two story Eagle Hotel was in business catering visitor attracted to the area's bounty of hunting and fishing. In 1912 the town of Survey was later renamed Bonita Springs
by a Tennessean named Ragsdale a land developer who purchased 2400 acres, surveyed the area and laid out a small town with streets and avenues named for potential buyers. He also renamed Surveyor's Creek to Imperial River.
Decades later with the opening of I-75 and the US 41 bypass, access to the area has brought shopping malls, office facilities and golf courses. Today, Bonita Springs
is a beautiful affluent area with beaches, high-end restaurants, recreational facilities and beautiful homes.
